BOSTON UNIVERSITY'S COLLEGE OF GENERAL STUDIES NEWS & STORIES
The following is a collection of features I wrote to showcase CGS students and alumni achievements for the CGS website. I completed this work as editorial intern for Boston University's College of General Studies.
CGS SYLLABUS: THE SPACE AND OBSERVATION PROJECT
August, 2022
Learning inside and outside the classroom is a hallmark of CGS’s curriculum. During the 2021 Summer Semester in New England, CGS students were given several assignments that highlighted interdisciplinary study and real-world applications for their coursework. In RH104: Rhetorical Practices from The Industrial Revolution through the Digital Revolution, taught by Senior Lecturer Stephanie Byttebier, students used the city of Boston as their inspiration to reimagine what can be done with underutilized space.
SAVORING THE CGS EXPERIENCE
December, 2021
Since the first day of his college experience, Diran Shahrik (‘21 QST’23) has embarked on a journey to pursue two very different interests. As he began his first semester at BU, Shahrik launched a startup with the Build Lab and produced a short film when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. For both projects, CGS has served as the backdrop.
NEUROSCIENCE FOR ALL
December, 2021
When Liadan Gunter (’12, CAS’14) graduated from BU, she followed a traditional path for a science major, working as a research assistant in several different labs. But after working for a few years, she realized that being a full-time scientist wasn’t for her. After years of gaining cultural experiences and realizing she wanted to help reduce inaccessibility of information in the science community, she changed her trajectory with the birth of her company, The Rewiring Lens.
WORKING TOWARD A ZERO WASTE FUTURE
November, 2021
What if businesses partnered together to turn their waste into reusable resources, rather than letting that waste go to landfills? With the help of the First Year Innovation Fellowship at Innovate@BU, Rachel Koh (CGS ’22, Questrom ‘24) is working on turning this idea, her brain child, into a fully operating project.
BOSTON'S LAST SURVIVING SALT MARSH
May, 2021
Several hundred years ago, when colonists ventured into the Boston area, they came across land sprawling with wetlands, mudflats, and salt marshes. Since then, much of the area has been filled in with landfill to build the city we know today. But though the urban landscape of Boston has changed dramatically over the centuries, one small nature preserve, located just a few miles northeast of Boston Logan International Airport, serves as a reminder of the way our environment shapes our lives.
“THE SALVE IS THE TELLING"
March, 2021
Award-winning author and teacher Emily Bernard discussed the importance of teaching race, as well as the experiences that led her to write Black Is the Body: Stories from My Grandmother’s Time, My Mother’s Time, and Mine for the College of General Studies’ annual Stanley Stone Distinguished Lecture. The lecture was held virtually on March 11 to an audience of nearly 300 members of the CGS community.
